How to Choose the Right API 11B Sucker Rod Grade?
Selecting the correct rod grade is critical to prevent downhole parting and optimize your rod pumping system’s run-time.
Grade D Sucker Rods: Crafted from high-quality alloy steel, these rods are heat-treated to provide high tensile strength. Best suited for deep wells and heavy-load environments with non-corrosive or effectively inhibited fluids.
Grade HL (High Load) Rods: Engineered for extra-deep wells or ultra-heavy pumping conditions where standard Grade D rods reach their fatigue limit.
Grade KD Rods: Features excellent corrosion resistance combined with moderate tensile strength, ideal for sour crude oil production.
Elite API 11B sucker rod series:
-
1. Anti-corrosion sucker rod:
PE semi-coated anti-corrosion sucker rod is an anti-corrosion sucker rod with an ultra-high molecular polyethylene anti-corrosion layer coated on the sucker rod body, and its head is spray-welded with nickel-based alloy within a certain length range.
Anti-corrosion sucker rod reduces eccentric wear between the rod and the pipe and prolongs the service life of the rod and the pipe. It is suitable for corrosive oil wells and can be used within a well depth of 1,700 meters. The working temperature should be lower than 80°C.
-
2. Full spray-welded anti-corrosion sucker rod:
The full spray-welded anti-corrosion sucker rod is anti-corrosion, wear-resistant, and high-temperature resistant. It is suitable for wells with complex well conditions such as severe corrosion, high temperature, and severe wax deposition, and is not limited by temperature.
The rod head and rod body are spray-welded for the entire length, and are equipped with SM-grade couplings. The spray-welded layer thickness at the rod head thread shoulder, wrench square, and flange neck is 0.3~0.4mm, and the rod body spray-welded layer thickness is 0.15~0.20mm.
-
3. Wax scraping sucker rod
-
4. Bare rod:
The bare rod is a special sucker rod, which is an important part connecting the pumping unit and the sucker rod column.
API Sucker Rod Couplings
Sucker rod couplings connect individual sucker rods and pony rods into a complete rod string.
Coupling selection should match:
Rod diameter
Rod grade
Thread type
Coupling class
Service condition
Depending on the application, T-class and SM-class couplings may be available where applicable.

Sucker Rod Coupling Inspection
Coupling quality depends heavily on thread geometry, dimensions and surface condition.
Depending on the purchase specification, inspection may include:
Thread profile inspection
Thread gauging
Coupling OD
Coupling length
Bore
Wrench-square dimensions
Surface condition
Hardness
Marking and traceability
Corrosion-Resistant Sucker Rod Selection
Corrosion-resistant sucker rods should be selected according to the actual well-fluid environment.
Important selection factors include:
H₂S concentration
CO₂ concentration
Water cut
Chloride content
Temperature
Well depth
Existing corrosion history
Rod load
Surface-treatment or coating system
Operating depth and temperature limits depend on the selected material, rod grade and coating configuration.
Do not assume one corrosion-resistant rod design is suitable for every sour or corrosive well.
API Spec 11B Compliant Manufacturing Process
Every single sucker rod and pony rod undergoes rigorous quality inspections to ensure field reliability.
Full-Length Heat Treatment: Normalizing and tempering to eliminate internal stress and achieve uniform grain structure.
Shot Peening: Enhances the fatigue resistance of the rod body by inducing compressive residual stress on the surface.
Thread Precision: CNC-machined threads strictly inspected with API standard gauges to ensure perfect make-up with sucker rod couplings.
Anti-Corrosion Coating & Packaging: Coated with rust-preventative oil and protected with plastic thread protectors, bundled in steel frames for safe maritime transport.
ELITE API 11b Sucker Rod
Q1: What is the difference between Grade D and Grade K sucker rods?
Grade D is commonly selected where higher mechanical loading is required, while Grade K may be considered where corrosion resistance is an important factor. Final selection depends on the actual well conditions.
Q2: What is a Grade KD sucker rod?
Grade KD is selected for applications requiring a combination of mechanical-strength and corrosion-related performance according to the approved manufacturer specification.
Q3: What is a Grade HL sucker rod?
Grade HL is used for high-load rod-string applications where higher mechanical
Q4: Can third-party inspection be arranged?
Third-party inspection can be arranged when specified in the purchase order or inspection plan.
