Description

ELITE supplies drill pipe float valves and complete float subs for oil and gas drilling applications. Available options include Model F plunger-type valves, Model G flapper-type valves, ported and non-ported configurations, baffle plates and matching valve pullers.

Float subs can be manufactured with the required pin and box connections, outside diameter, bore, valve recess and overall length. The float valve can be quoted separately or installed in the completed sub before shipment.

To confirm the correct product, send the valve size code, existing valve dimensions, float sub connections, required pressure rating and quantity. If the model is unknown, send clear photographs and measured dimensions of the existing valve or sub.

Float Valve or Float Sub: Which Product Do You Need?

A drill pipe float valve is the internal non-return valve that allows drilling fluid to move down the drill string while restricting reverse flow. It is installed inside a machined recess in a float sub, bit sub or another approved BHA component.

A float sub is the threaded tubular body that contains the valve. The sub must be manufactured with the correct connections, outside diameter, bore, recess diameter and recess depth for the selected valve.

When requesting a quotation, specify whether you require:
Float valve only
Float sub only
Float valve installed in the float sub
Valve with baffle plate and puller
Replacement seals or internal components
The float valve size cannot be selecting from drill pipe OD alone. The installation bore, recess dimensions, connection and requiring internal flow area must also be checked.

Model F and Model G Drill Pipe Float Valves

Model F Plunger-Type Float Valve

Model F uses a spring-loaded plunger that moves away from the seat during normal downward circulation. When the pressure below the valve exceeds the pressure above it, the plunger returns toward the seat to restrict reverse flow.
The plunger-style design is commonly used where positive shut-off and a compact internal valve arrangement are required. Available size codes and pressure ratings must be confirmed against the actual installation.

Model FA Ported Plunger Valve

Model FA follows the basic plunger-valve arrangement but includes a port through the plunger. The port allows controlled pressure equalization or limited filling, depending on the valve design and operating procedure.
The port size and intended function should be confirmed before ordering. A ported valve does not provide the same reverse-flow restriction as a fully non-ported valve.

Model G Flapper-Type Float Valve

Model G uses a hinged flapper that opens with downward circulation and closes when reverse flow acts against it. When open, the flapper design generally provides a larger internal flow path than a comparable plunger configuration.
Selection should consider the required flow area, dropped-object clearance, drilling-fluid condition and the internal diameter available through the installed valve.

Ported or Non-Ported Configuration

A non-ported float valve is selected when stronger reverse-flow isolation is required. A ported version allows limited pressure communication or filling through a controlled opening.
The final choice should follow the drilling program and operating procedure. The supplier should not select a ported or non-ported valve only from the drill pipe size.

Inspection and Documentation

Inspection requirements should be confirmed according to whether the order covers a valve, a float sub or a completed valve-and-sub assembly.
For drill pipe float valves, the agreed inspection may include:
