Description
When HDD drill pipe needs to be replaced, pipe diameter alone is rarely enough to identify the correct rod. Rig model, connection type, pin and box geometry, rod length, tool-joint dimensions, make-up torque and bend radius should all be checking against the existing drilling system.
This is especially important when only part of a drill pipe rack is being replacing and the new rods must work with rods already in service.
ELITE manufactures replacement and OEM-compatible HDD drill pipe for selected Vermeer, Ditch Witch, TT Technologies, XCMG, Goodeng and other HDD rig platforms. Depending on the original rod design, both one-piece forged and inertia-welded constructions are available.
You can identify the drill pipe you need using any of the following:
- Rig brand and model
- OEM part number
- Connection or thread drawing
- A sample joint, or clear photos and measurements of the existing rod

HDD Drill Pipe by Rig Brand & Model
HDD drill pipe is highly model-dependent. Two rods with similar outside diameters may use different connections, tool-joint dimensions, lengths or bending characteristics and therefore may not be interchangeable.
We organize supply by rig make and model rather than by generic pipe size because connection geometry and rig generation are critical to interchangeability. ELITE supports model-based identification for selected HDD equipment, including Vermeer, Ditch Witch, TT Technologies, XCMG, Goodeng, Drillto and other machines subject to engineering confirmation.
Compatibility note: Rig model names alone are not sufficient to confirm interchangeability. Final compatibility should be checked against the specific rig generation and the existing rod, connection drawing or sample joint.
1. Vermeer-Compatible HDD Drill Pipe
We supply replacement HDD drill pipe for a range of Vermeer D-series rigs, from compact utility drills to larger maxi-rig platforms. Connection geometry varies across the D-series and may differ by rig generation, so each quotation is checked against the specific machine and existing rod before compatibility is confirmed.

2. Ditch Witch-Compatible HDD Drill Rod
Ditch Witch replacement drill pipe is also model-specific. Legacy models such as JT920, JT1220 and JT1720 remain active in aftermarket procurement because many rigs continue operating long after a model is discontinued. Where connection families differ between older and newer generations, we identify them separately rather than treating them as one interchangeable group.

3. TT Technologies-Compatible Drill Pipes
We can supply drill rods matched to selected TT Technologies pipe-string connections. Because demand and configuration vary by model, lead time and minimum order quantity are confirming case by case. Send the rig model, connection information and an existing rod drawing or sample where available.
4. XCMG, Goodeng and Other Chinese HDD Rigs
In addition to North American rig platforms, ELITE supplies replacement drill pipe for selected XCMG, Goodeng, Drillto and other Chinese HDD rigs. The same identification principle applies: the correct rod is determined by the actual connection and dimensional requirements, not by nominal rod diameter alone.
For mixed fleets, our engineering team can review the rig model together with an existing rod, drawing or connection details before confirming compatibility.

HDD Drill Rod Connections
The connection is one of the first details to verify when identifying replacement HDD drill pipe. A rod with the correct body OD can still be unsuitable if the pin and box dimensions, shoulder configuration, thread geometry or make-up requirements do not match the existing drill string.
In partial rack replacement, the connection may be the first available identification point. We can review the connection family against an existing rod, drawing or sample. Because connection naming varies by manufacturer and rig generation, we do not confirm compatibility from a connection name alone.
| Connection Family | Typical Rig / Application | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ditch Witch-type connections | Model-dependent | Rig generation + existing rod geometry |
| Firestick-series connections | Model-dependent | Rig generation + existing rod geometry |
| NC / IF (larger and custom rods) | Larger or non-standard strings | Thread designation + shoulder dimensions |
| Buyer-specific / drawing-supplied thread | Custom or OEM-compatible builds | Full drawing or sample joint |
Forged vs. Inertia-Welded HDD Drill Pipe
ELITE manufactures both one-piece forged and inertia-welded drill pipe. The correct construction should follow the original rod design and the mechanical requirements of the rig; neither method should be treated as universally superior for every replacement application.
| Construction | Typical Use | Key Procurement Check |
|---|---|---|
| One-Piece Forged Drill Rod | Replacement where the original rig/rod system uses integral forged construction | Match thread, tool-joint geometry, rod length, bend radius and torque requirements |
| Inertia-Welded Drill Pipe | Replacement where the original rod design uses welded tool joints | Confirm weld design, connection geometry, material properties, NDT and fatigue requirements |
For partial rack replacement, matching connection geometry, torque capacity, stiffness and bending behavior with the rods remaining in service is more important than choosing a construction method in isolation.
Replacement HDD Drill Rod for Existing Rigs
A large share of HDD drill pipe orders are replacement purchases rather than complete new drill-string packages. Contractors may need new rods because of wear, connection damage, mechanical failure or expansion of an existing pipe rack. In these cases, the replacement rods must match the equipment and rods already in service.
Useful identification information includes:
- Rig make + model: exact brand, model and generation if known.
- OEM part number: an original part number can shorten the identification process.
- Existing connection: pin and box dimensions, thread designation and shoulder dimensions.
- Original drawing: a manufacturer drawing is one of the most reliable references for engineering review.
- Sample rod: an existing joint can be measured and checked where drawings are unavailable.
If only part of a rack is being replaced, thread compatibility and make-up geometry should be checked against the rods that will remain in service to reduce the risk of connection problems.
Stock, MOQ & Bulk Orders
Standard configurations are handled differently from rods requiring new tooling, special connections or custom dimensions. For this reason, HDD drill pipe pricing is normally confirmed by rig model, rod specification and order quantity rather than published as a single universal price.
MOQ is determining by model and tooling requirements. For fleet-scale replacement projects, rack quantities, private-label marking and export packing can be supporting where order volume allows. Lead time and pricing are confirming together at the quotation stage.
Manufacturing Capability
- One-piece forging / upsetting
- Inertia friction welding
- Quench-and-temper heat treatment
- CNC thread machining
- Thread surface treatment
- Final dimensional and quality inspection
Quality Inspection and Documentation
For replacement HDD drill pipe, dimensional compatibility is only part of the quality review. Depending on the purchase specification, buyers may also require material traceability, mechanical properties, connection inspection and final dimensional records.
| Inspection | What Is Checked / Documented |
|---|---|
| Chemical / Material | MTR / material identification |
| Mechanical Test | Yield strength and tensile strength |
| Hardness | Heat-treatment condition |
| UT / NDT | Material or weld integrity, as specified |
| Thread Gauging | Pin / box dimensions and gauge acceptance |
| Straightness | Straightness / rotational alignment |
| Final Dimensions | OD / ID / length |
| Traceability | Heat number / batch identification |
The exact inspection scope depends on the product specification and purchase requirements. Inspection percentages, test methods and acceptance criteria should be confirmed before production rather than assumed from a general catalogue description.
HDD Drill Pipe Applications

ELITE HDD Drill Pipe – FAQ
Q1: Will your drill pipe connect to my existing Vermeer or Ditch Witch pipe?
A: Compatibility depends on the specific rig generation, connection and rod dimensions. Send the rig model and, if possible, a photo, drawing or sample of the existing connection so we can confirm the applicable specification.
Q2: What determines HDD drill rod price?
A: Price depends on rod construction, rig compatibility, connection type, dimensions, material, manufacturing requirements and quantity. New tooling or special connections can also affect the quotation.
Q3: Do you manufacture both forged and inertia-welded HDD drill pipes?
