What is a sand control screen pipe?
A sand control screen pipe is a perforated base pipe with an external wire wrapped screen jacket, used in oil, gas to filter out sand while allowing fluid to flow into the wellbore. Continuous V-shaped (wedge) wire creates accurate slots and high collapse resistance. Providing reliable sand control and long service life in downhole conditions.
Main applications of wire wrapped screen pipes
Oil and gas production wells requiring precise sand control
Injection wells and disposal wells
Industrial filtration systems requiring high-strength screen construction.
Oil Well Sand Control Screen Pipe & Wire Wrapped Screen Pipe for Oil Wells
A wire wrapped screen pipe consists of a perforated base pipe, a wire wrapped screen jacket (screen drum) and threaded or welded connectors. We form the screen jacket by continuously wrapping V-shaped wedge wire around support rods and welding each contact point.
This construction forms continuous slots with accurate width, high collapse resistance and excellent sand control performance in oil, gas applications.

Technical Selection: Wire-Wrapped vs. Slotted vs. Premium Screens
| Completion Screen Type | Primary Sand Control Mechanism | Open Area % | Abrasive Resistance | Ideal Downhole Reservoir Condition |
| Pipe-Base Wire Wrapped Screen | Continuous V-wire profile welded over API perforated base pipe | 15% – 35% | High (V-shape prevents sand trapping) | Medium to fine sand formations; high production oil & gas wells |
| Rod-Based Wire Wrapped Screen | Self-supporting wedge wire cylinder over longitudinal ribs | 20% – 40% | Moderate | Standalone shallow completion, water injection |
| Slotted Liner | Straight/Keystone longitudinal slots cut into API casing | 2% – 6% | High Tensile Strength | Heavy oil SAGD wells, gravel pack completions, low-budget wells |
| Pre-Packed Sand Screen | Dual wire-wrapped screens filled with resin-coated gravel media | 10% – 20% | Very High | Fine, poorly sorted formation sand without gravel packing |
Completion Configuration
The same nominal screen size may be used in very different completion designs. Before finalizing slot and base-pipe geometry, confirm whether the screen will be used as a standalone screen, in an open-hole gravel pack, cased-hole gravel pack or another completion arrangement.
Collapse & Pressure Rating
Collapse rating is configuration-specific and should be calculated or tested against the selected base pipe, wall thickness, perforation pattern and screen construction. With higher ratings available depending on base pipe wall thickness and wire gauge. Every batch ships with third-party pressure test reports alongside the MTC.
Wedge wire screen also be named as Vee-Wire screen pipe , continuous slot Vee-wire screen tube, wire wrapped screen, wire wound screen water filter. It is made up of Vee-shaping wrapping wire and round rod in each intersection welding together. Accurate slot and high filtration precision.
Wedge Wire Profile Geometry & Slot Tolerance Standards
V-Shaped Profile Wire: Designed with a narrow outer slot width and wider inner opening. Sand particles that pass through the outer slot edge flow freely into the interior without lodging or clogging the screen matrix.
Precision Resistance Welding: Every junction point of the wedge wire and longitudinal support rib is 100% fusion-welded using computer-controlled CNC welding machines.
Slot Width Tolerances:
For slots ≤ 100μm : Tolerance within ± 5μm
For slots> 100μm : Tolerance within ± 10μm
Quality Assurance, Testing & Compliance Standards
All oilfield completion sand control screens undergo rigorous quality control protocols prior to export:
Optical Slot Gauge Inspection: 100% automated optical measurement of slot uniformity across the entire pipe length.
Base Pipe NDT: Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) performed on API 5CT base pipes per API Spec 5CT PSL-2/PSL-3 requirements.
Weld Shear Strength Test: Destructive shear testing on wire-to-rib weld joints to guarantee mechanical integrity under high torque/tensile loads during lower completion running.
Mill Test Documentation: Delivered with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC) detailing base pipe heat numbers, wire chemical analysis, collapse pressure test logs, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, Intertek) reports.
Advantages of ELI API wire wrapped screen pipes
1. Non-plugging continuous slot design: V-shaped wedge wire openings become wider toward the inside, reducing plugging and keeping flow smooth.
2. Accurate slot size: slot openings from 0.02 mm to 10 mm are available with tight tolerances for different sand and gravel sizes.
3. High strength and collapse resistance: one-piece welded construction and strong base pipe allow higher loads without extra support.
4. Wide material options: SUS304 / 316L / Duplex 2205 and other stainless grades for different corrosion environments.
5. Easy to clean and maintain: smooth surfaces and continuous slots make backwashing and chemical cleaning more effective.
6. Long service life and low overall cost: durable structure reduces workover frequency and total lifecycle cost.
7.High Open Area:Continuous slot geometry provides a larger open flow area than conventional perforated liners, reducing pressure drop while maintaining effective sand retention.
Common Purchasing Risks
Mixing Water-Well Screens With Oil-Well Completion Screens
Water-well wedge-wire screens may not have the base pipe, connection, axial strength, collapse rating or traceability required for oil and gas completions.
Selecting Slot Size Without Formation Data
An incorrect slot can result in sand production, plugging or excessive pressure loss.Slot selection should be based on the completion method and particle-size distribution. For standalone screens, formation sieve analysis is required. For gravel-pack completions, the screen slot should be selected together with the specified gravel size and completion design.
Comparing Different Base Pipes
Two screens with the same OD may use different grades, wall thicknesses, perforation patterns and connections.
Ignoring Screen-Jacket Attachment
The screen jacket must remain secured during handling, running and production.
Accepting Unclear Pressure Claims
The quotation must identify whether the rating applies to the base pipe, filter jacket or complete assembly.
Using “API Screen” as a Complete Specification
API casing or tubing may be used as the base pipe, but the complete screen assembly still requires its own approved drawing, slot, mechanical ratings and inspection plan.
Not Confirming Blank Pipe and Active Screen Length
Total joint length and active filtration length are not the same.

ELITE sand screens – FAQ
Q1: What slot sizes are available?
Q2: Which materials do you offer?
Q3: How is the screen made non-plugging?
Q4: What base pipe and thread connections do you support?
Q5: How do I choose the right slot size for my well?
Q6: What is a sand control screen pipe?
Q7: What is the primary advantage of Pipe-Base Screens over Rod-Based Screens in oil wells?
A: Pipe-Base Screens utilize an inner heavy-wall API 5CT casing/tubing as the load-bearing core. The external wedge wire jacket only handles sand filtration, while the base pipe absorbs all tensile, compression, and high differential collapse loads during downhole placement.
Q8: What is the difference between a slotted liner and wire-wrapped screen?
A: A slotted liner has slots machined directly into the pipe body.
A wire-wrapped screen uses a separate or directly wrapped filtration layer that generally provides more precise slot control and higher filtration area.
Q9: Can the screen be used in open-hole completions?
A: Yes, subject to formation suitability, screen type, particle-size distribution, wellbore stability and mechanical requirements.
Q10: Can you supply K55 slotted screen pipe?
A: K55 base pipe can be evaluated for slotted-screen applications according to the pipe size, wall thickness, slot pattern, connection and required mechanical ratings.
Q11: Can third-party inspection be arranged?
A: Yes. The inspection company, scope, witness points, cost and reporting requirements should be agreed before production.
